What Is A BLOG?

Tech 101: June 2007
By Traci Riley

According to Wikipedia, the term ‘blog’ is a blend of the words web and log.

Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other resources related to its topic. Most blogs use written text, although some use other media, such as photographs, video, and audio.

Blogs... are essentially a forum for expressing personal ideas and commentary.

Blogging in its earliest form was at the start of the World Wide Web, allowing postings as newsgroups. Today, blogging is used for everything from politics and social issues to travel and fashion. They are essentially a forum for expressing personal ideas and commentary. Blogs can be private or it can be used for business purposes. If the intent of a blog is to enhance the communication and culture in an organization or for marketing, branding or PR purposes, it is considered a corporate blog.

Blogs vary in form. They can be separated by subject but they can also be varied media type. A blog written by a mobile device like a cellular phone or PDA is called a mblog. It’s defined by the type of device used to compose it.

As with anything, there are both positives and negatives that drive the use or misuse of blogging. Next month we’ll look at the benefits of blogging and how that can help your church or ministry.

We want your feedback! Send in your ideas for topics that would be of most help to you to ResultsKatalyst Feedback.
